Denver Crawford and Tom Ruple grew up in the American South and collaborated on this work between November-December 2019. In the basement of a NY coffee shop where they were both employed, they decided to pass a canvas back and forth 7 times. Each time they were balancing the other’s work. What emerged was a politically charged piece titled “Thou Hypocrite!” referring to Matthew 7:5 of the New Testament.
Tom’s approach brought a level of composition and order as in his paintings. Denver treated his role as a kind of performance, putting “actions” onto the canvas. What emerged is a visually striking and deeply inquisitive look at the nature of collaboration through art and its reflections on two young men.
